In this week’s Parasha, Parshat Devarim, Moshe reminds the Jewish people that Hashem carried them in the Wilderness like a man carries his son.
Like a father would do for a son, Hashem protected and supported the Jewish people during their journey through the desert. He guided and protected them with a pillar of fire and a pillar of cloud. He nourished them with manna and quenched their thirst from a well.
Moshe wants the Jewish people to appreciate the tremendous kindnesses that Hashem performed for them.
A very important aspect of kindness is the ability to recognize it and appreciate it when it is done to us. By being aware of the great kindnesses that Hashem did for our nation, we are sensitized to how important it is to be kind to others.
From the air that we breathe to the food that we consume, from the beauty of nature to the complexity of the human body, we should be grateful for the constant kindnesses that Hashem does for all of His creatures. This should inspire us to emulate Hashem’s ways and show kindness to others.
