Arcadia was established in 1903 and has been caring for Jewish children for well over 100 years.

Incorporated into the Chev Group in 2002, today, most of the children who live at Arcadia are placed there for their own protection either by order of the Children’s Court or through private placements. They reside in a brand new, modern facility situated on the corner of Long and George Avenues, which was constructed from the ground up in 2016.

The main concept behind the design of the building is the use of simple construction techniques and sustainable design features to create a de-institutionalised home, where the children can engage with the space and make it their own. Core to the concept was the intentional separation between the Residential and Day Care functions. Besides the outdoor pool and playground areas which can be used by all the children the three basics structures are:

Full time and well-trained child-care workers supervise and care for the children by day and night. Medical care, education, counselling, play and homework supervision are all provided and every effort is made to assist Arcadia’s children to achieve their full potential.

For over half a century the name “Selwyn Segal” has struck a chord of tenderness and compassion in the hearts of Johannesburg’s Jewish community.  More than a place, Selwyn Segal is a concept, an ideology that encompasses protection and hope, where special people deserve special care.

This organisation was established in 1956 by the late Leon Segal and his wife, Fanny, whose only child, Selwyn, suffered from a disability.  It was integrated into the Chev Group in 2005.

The Selwyn Segal Centre in Sandringham is set among well-groomed, tranquil gardens. The Centre provides accommodation, therapy and stimulation for 120 residents and services to a large number of day care attendees. They provide a full day care programme which caters to all levels of functioning. The programme is geared towards grooming, self-care, spirituality, life and social skills, current affairs and recreation. The multidisciplinary team consists of medical services, rehab services and social services and provides holistic care to each resident and day care attendee.

Due to demand, Sandringham Square, situated opposite the Lodge, was opened to provide additional accommodation to mental health residents.  That facility houses a further 40 people.

Three nutritious kosher meals are provided daily and the atmosphere is conducive to Jewish life with special meals being served on Shabbat and yomtov.
