Support Worker (Caregiver) – Home Based Care

Location: Sandringham, Johannesburg
Position Type: Full Time – Fixed Term

Purpose of the Job

Provide essential assistance and support (physical, emotional and social well-being) to beneficiaries who need care while they live in their own homes. This includes ensuring the cleanliness and tidiness of the homes of the aged persons enrolled in the home-based care program, contributing to a safe and healthy environment.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Be sensitive and kind to the older person in a manner that is appropriate to their condition and level of understanding.
  • Report concerns about the client, household equipment, appliances, and related household tasks to the registered nurse, social worker, social auxiliary worker, and/or Programme Coordinator.
  • Assist with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting, ensuring that individuals maintain their personal hygiene and dignity.
  • Keep accurate records of medication administration and any observed side effects.
  • Administer medication according to the prescribed script (if required) and maintain accurate records as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Provide basic wound care as prescribed by the doctor or nurse.
  • Report all signs of physical illness and any concerns requiring medical attention to the nurse.
  • Administer first aid and change dressings when necessary.
  • May assist with meal preparation based on dietary restrictions and preferences, and assist with feeding if necessary.
  • Assist individuals with mobility challenges to move around the home, including transferring, walking, or using mobility aids.
  • Assist residents with active and passive exercises.
  • Build rapport and provide emotional support through conversation, companionship, and activities that promote mental and emotional well-being.
  • Perform housekeeping tasks such as cleaning, laundry, and tidying to maintain a safe and comfortable living environment; this is not limited to the above.
  • Assist with and escort individuals who require transportation to medical or other essential appointments.
  • Keep accurate records and communicate with healthcare professionals, family members, and supervisors about the individual’s condition and progress.
  • Report any concerns to the nurse, social worker, and Programme Coordinator.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Caregiving certificate and minimum 3 years of experience
  • Good English skills and ability to read and write
